In 2011 AUB awards noted astronomer and educator Owen Jay Gingerich an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Humane Letters). Gingerich was director of AUB’s Lee Observatory from 1955 to 1958. He instituted "Open Nights" for star gazers and set up an astronomical library. He returned to the United States to earn a PhD at Harvard University where he taught until his retirement in 2000. Gingerich is a firm believer in the compatibility of religion and science.

In 1992, following the destruction of College Hall, a "time capsule" box is opened that had been buried with the cornerstone laid by William E. Dodge in 1871. It contains: the newspapers Al Janna, Al Jina, and Hadikat Al Akhbar; religious speeches; pamphlets and short stories; laws and regulations for the School of Medicine; the SPC constitution and incorporation papers; and a college catalog. All were in good shape!

Cats become a fixture on campus during the Lebanese Civil War when they seek sanctuary on the campus after their owners flee the country. Shortly thereafter, in 1993, the campuses of AUB, the American Community School, and International College became an official bird sanctuary. Somehow, preditors and preyed upon maintain a balance. Cats with nicked ears have been spayed.

The legendary Milk Bar, a campus snack shop, acquires the “milk bar” appellation from British troops who were stationed in Lebanon during World War II. It was located in Ada Dodge Hall, the old student union building. Some say the Milk Bar was closed after College Hall was bombed in 1991 because the space was needed for offices. Others will tell you that it was closed in the late 1980s to reduce costs.

On November 19, 1993, AUB's International Advisory Council meets for the first time. Senior NBC News Correspondent John Chancellor was IAC chairperson.

In 2010 the Class Ring Ceremony is revived after a long hiatus. The ceremony was initiated by the University Student Faculty Committee (USFC) and celebrates the transition from student to alumnus.
